there seems to be an alarming trend for boxes to end up in my cube.

due to this bug i have another solaris workstation in my cube which is getting solaris 9 installed on it, to see if the crapplet works on that. i'm also setting up a gnome 2.2 tinderbox for rhl 7.3. it'll probably be too confusing to have them and the gnome 2.0 snaps on RC, but they'll probably be downloadable from somewhere.

this past weekend joe peach and i dragged a reluctant nat to go see area2. sadly busta rhymes was not going to be there, and i didn't get into the bowie set as much as i'd have liked, but moby put on a great show, even if the crowd had stopped cheering before the band left the stage. i guess it had been a long day and they were tired. anyway if you have the opportunity to see a moby show take advantage of it. they're fun.

yesterday i spent a good portion of the day fighting some stupid bug. it's kind of funny, but i finally have pango/gtk HEAD working on my laptop.

yesterday joe cooked up some of the sausage left over from sunday's dinner with chris and shona:

five minutes, turkish

my reason 2.0 upgrade arrived yesterday. unfortunately 2 of the cds don't work in my laptop (work fine on the desktop) so i will have to burn a copy of them i guess.

today is nat's birthday:

i wish i were as happy as others appear to be

my guitar is sad. one of its strings broke today and it is horrifically out of tune. but that's ok as i needed to go to the music store to get some drumsticks as my drums are coming up here in a couple of weeks. yay.

i have nothing funny to say about this picture

my hack for the day is in getting XDarwin to work with multiple instances. it seems that it always sets $DISPLAY to :0, even if you run it with XDarwin :1. so, i have to do REAL_DISPLAY=:1 XDarwin :1 and have my .xinitrc check for $REAL_DISPLAY. blah.

i picked up a neat cd yesterday - moby "feeling so real" remixes. it's got a track at the end with all the individual parts of the song by themselves, for a remix competition he had back in '94.

i have to decide whether to go read a [ depressing [[ but nonetheless excellent ]] ] book in the park or stay inside and watch hours of simpsons + commentary dvd. the problem is that i usually can't get very comfortable reading in the park, and we have a nice couch here.

these articles really don't make me feel better about the huge mosquito bites on my legs.

fun with the mac today.

for the past 2 days i've been browsing mostly using chimera nightlies. after "moving to trash" the flash plugin, it seems to not suck all cpu quite as often as it used to. it crashes every once in a while, and doesn't remember my passwords, but it's quite a bit zippier that it's larger cousing, and the location bar can keep up with my typing.

cause i was lonely and she was ka-ray-zee

i noticed the new powermacs come with jaguar and ship in 1-3 days. grr. i really want strtok_r().

Work becomes ever more depressing, routine, improved only by the occasional near-death experience.

today, while doing some bug-buddy hacking, i figured out how to get sendmail working. it turns out it was shipped setuid (root), rather than setgid (smmsp). once i flipped those bits, bug-buddy happily submitted bug reports. oh, and editing /etc/hostconfig gets sendmail started up at boot. yay.

"Yes, Toph, Jesus died for your Christmas fun."

i'm typing this on my back "porch" (really just some stairs) because it's intensely hot inside. my normal airport card doesn't seem to get this far, but fortunately i found some orinoco drivers for os x. their install(er) didn't work, but after cp'ing the files into their correct location, things seem to be working fine (although i haven't suspended, which was killed my linux vaios). well, almost fine. i seem to have acquired some more mosquito bites. also this scares me.

wow, it's hot today. the nice thing about it being hot now, as opposed to june/july, is that at least there are cicadas now. i think they make it feel hotter, though.

joe's friend kara said she'd move to boston and go out with me if i bought phil's car (for her to drive).

when asked how long i had before she was allowed to dump me, she didn't really give an answer.

i got gish the other day, and have been serendipitously impressed. it gives a good glimpse at how good early pumpkin shows must have been. the only complaint is that "window paine" at most half as long as i'd want it - every time it really starts to peak it dies down and is over. i would hope live performances would maintain a bit more, and last at least 10 minutes.

one of my goals lately is to learn how to make myself conscious during dreams, such that i can basically will things to happen and what not. so far i've not had much success.

i'd been wondering why googling for jacob berkman pointed to my advogato page. however, doing an advanced search yields the answer.

nice to see bill joy not changing his party line in the 3 (!!!) years since he did a talk at CMU. people kept asking about what he thought of linux, when sun was going to ship linux, etc. and he grew visibly more annoyed. although i would too, as the people didn't seem to pick up on the fact that he didn't want to talk about linux.

my scores from putt-putt yesterday:

first 3 holes: 13 (+7)
last 15 holes: 37 (+1)

went mountain biking with blizzard again. this time i lowered the pressure in my tires quite a bit, and riding was much easier. we then picked up joe and got some bbq before going to the movies:

it truly is a cruel, cruel summer

speaking of crush, the smashing pumpkins song of said name is truly beautiful.

also the beginning of let down, if you listen with headphones (somewhat loudly) you can hear a noise at the beginning. i cannot hear it when playing on my speakers, but i like the noise. i do not know how to describe it, but it does remind me of the beginning of friends on zeppelin iii.

speaking of radiohead you should read this.

i am trying to go to sleep but iTunes keeps playing good songs.

i could go for a pretzel.

every once in a while i get this overwhelming [ nagging ] feeling that i need a [ creative ] outlet but at the same time i don't have anything [ original ] to say let alone [ anything ] interesting.

i can't tell if i hold others to the standards i hold myself to, or if i hold myself to the standards i hold others to.

how many times in the last month have you said to yourself, "i'm glad we put a man on the moon"? how about for inventing nuclear weapons? what about building the great wall of china?

we put the meta in pseudometamerism.

someone was talking about a situation they had with their kids, which made me realize that either i'm not ready to be a parent or i am as ready as i will ever be. the latter may be the case since i can no longer stand watching mtv. it's just too annoying.

and the new old navy commercials. i used to think they had bad commercials, but i realized that the only bad commercials are ones which target you and don't make you want the thing. so old navy is not targeting me. they are in the abstract i-have-a-bank-account-and-charge-card sense but not the i-buy-clothes one.

i wonder how long a lightbulb could be powered by the energy an average person spends tying their shoes in their first 30 years of life. is it enough energy to cook a can of soup?

the future of html lies in the <shock> tag. this tag gives webmasters the opportunity to shape users web habits by using negative reinforcement. to be fair, webmaster's will get shocked when their're spelling or grammer errors on there page.

english has 150 words for "donut" but only one for "hot dog".

learning backwards would be fun. "creative use of language is what makes us human," picked up in college linguistics classes, would have been a handy thing to know in 4th grade english.

weekend update.

friday. went to the aquarium. the two feelings i got from this was sadness, due to the stuff about pollution / habitat destruction / overfishing killing a lot of fish etc., and hunger because well, it was mostly seafood things. i ran into joe right near home and he was going for a burrito so i got one with him. later we went to the apple store to get 10.2 but there was a mad line, so we just went to hvd. sq.

saturday. went to the apple store to get 10.2. installed it on the computers; works pretty well. iChat's nice. libtool doesn't work right. had thai for lunch. party.

sunday. played baseball with joe and phil for a while. there were too many people at the park, it being such a nice day, so we couldn't really belt out the dingers. instead, we batted left handed. surprisingly i ended up hitting some better than i used to be able to hit right handed. since we are old we got tired and came home and watched some simpsons. then we headed to the barking crab for a tasty waterside dinner. i couldn't bring myself to eat the stuff on the inside, though, which is too bad. after dinner we played bocce ball until the lights went out at midnight.

nearing exhaustion.
