this weekend joe and i spent some
time with phil. i realized that
i don't remember him being happy much. he didn't understand that,
but i think it's due to stuff like this or maybe even this. anyway he
dumped this on me:
blizzard had a funny quote but i can't remember it
i also actually learned some css and stuff this weekend, and played
with php. now i have some functions that will link to different
dates on other peoples' web dinguses, so i can do <? phil_link ("20000327", "phil
is angry again") ?> and stuff. yes, weekends without
nat are that boring.

Subject: Last Minute Deals for Columbus Day
Dear Jacob,
Columbus Day means "discovery." So why not discover just how
spontaneous you can be by booking a last minute trip on
Travelocity?
go to hell.
as far as i can tell, mozilla does not honor a:hover {
text-decoration: blink; }. i don't really want my name
associated with this in a bug report, nor am i convinced that this
isn't, in fact, a feature.
still trying to get some green builds out of the HEAD tinderbox.
i've plain given up on gedit people being sane. epochs are popping
up everywhere on the -2-0 branch. i need to finish this searchtool
replacement so i can get some rhl 8.0 builds going, so that i can
return everyone to
sanity.

went to THE STROKES with joe and pat last night. it was
pretty good, although short, but that's what i expected. apparently
they were in hvd sq
partying before the show (news.google.com search wins
again).
then west wing etc. etc.
somehow i've managed to be more uninspired today than yesterday.

can a taste of love be so wrong / as all things must surely have

had thai with phil then walked
around for a while.

go listen to SAW II disc 2 again.
our OFFICE is full of CANADA DRY

October 7, 2002
when i set at my desk eating pretzels
the little bits of salt fall off and into my keyboard, making it
impossible to press some of the keys.
* * *
this weekend joe got madden 2003 and nhl 2003 and while doing
laundry last night i started a browns franchise thing. anyway in
the second half of the first game my backup quarterback was playing,
which confused me because i didn't see couch get injured. so i put
couch back in.
a little later he got injured.
broken jaw, out 11 weeks.
oh and this was pre-season.
i'd complain but that's not so far from reality.
* * *
i tried opera 6 to see what all the fuss is about. after the 2nd
incorrectly rendered page (out of 2 pages) i binned it. the ui is
horrible.
* * *
i used to have glow-in-the-dark star stickers in my bedroom. the
problem with them is that i don't wear my glasses at night, so it
just produces this blurry glow. my ceiling in boston leaks in the
morning, which wakes me up, and the other day while at work a big
chunk of it fell down. fortunately it is not over any computers or
instruments. i called the super like 5 or 6 weeks ago, but i don't
know that anything happened. i should probably call again; there's
a large change that the message i left on saturday with whom i
presume to be his son didn't get to him. there is a chance,
however, that the ceiling fell because they were trying to fix the
leak. which i have no problem with, since a hole in my ceiling is
not going to keep me from sleeping. people talking right outside my
window takes care of that just fine.
* * *

since joe and i watched some live tv this weekend, we had to endure
commercials. after watching the above minute long commercial about
bi-polarism for the 10th time, i yearn for 3-dimensional web
browsers.
these pages also remind
me of nat; however to be fair i should
also link to this incident.
it's always weird for me to read stuff i wrote where i used caps and
puntiation.
* * *
hmm i wonder if it's time to go home yet...
* * *
October 8, 2002
omg THE STROKESs cd is so good.
* * *
i've been living in boston for almost 3 years, and was mostly living
in pittsburgh for a good 2 1/2 years before that, and i still dial
the cleveland area code by default sometimes.
* * *
today i saw a bumper sticker that read "No Prisoners Anywhere".
somehow i managed to trick joe into going to charlie's where we ran
into pat and ryan. i
didn't ask about jennnnnnn's n*sync shirt.
evidently the super may have fixed the leaky ceiling.
* * *
October 9, 2002
hmm no leaks to wake me up this morning; the heaters did that
instead. and then made it too hot to sleep.
there are so many geese on the way to work, but i never see any dead
ones. do dogs find them at night and hide them somewhere? i did
see a dead blue jay though.
* * *
some time ago i moved to storing my mail on my desktop at home, and
reading it via imap. this has afforded me the opportunity to use
Mail.app a bit. i haven't figured out the keybindings for marking
messages as unread, and i've realized that it doesn't really matter
what the keybindings are, however i can only remember the
keybindings for one mailer at a time. so, for now that mailer is
still evo.
blah i still need to copy the 1.5G of mail i have on my laptop into
my imap server.
* * *
i really don't know what's going on any more
i watched the west wing with chris and shona at phil's.
* * *
October 10, 2002
my watch was on chronometer this morning, which resulted in me
either time-warping into the future, or taking 45 minutes to walk
from my bed to my desk.
"Using macros is dangerous" -- slashdot
i also had some weird dreams. one was me being in the west wing,
although i can't remember if i was josh or bartlet. probably josh.
the other one was a bunch of people near a zoo or a post office? we
had some letters or something that were supposed to be mailed. i
don't get it either.
* * *
i really hate cpan.
inexplicably google has no hits for "cpan drinking game".
sometime in the future i need to sit down with joe and phil and formalize the rules, but here's a draft
off the top of my head:
-
every time you need to use cpan, just take a shot to get things
started. it's going to be a long day.
-
if cpan needs to be configured, even though you configured it
before, take a shot.
-
take another shot, because you accidentally typed the wrong path to
lynx.
-
when cpan tries to download something using lynx, but you're behind
a firewall, and it doesn't do passive mode automatically, and then
you have to go back and configure it again, yeah take a shot.
-
now when it tries to download from sourceforget.net, and they
changed their mirror layout, so every file needs to be tried twice,
take another shot (and go back and configure it again).
-
cpan will now tell you that you can upgrade it. tell it no, watch
it try to upgrade perl (!!!), and finish the bottle.
-
oh but try to kill the ncftpget process so it doesn't
download perl. then watch it run ncftp to get it, take a
shot, and then kill that.
-
now take another shot as cpan uses Net::FTP so you can't
just kill it.
-
finish the second bottle as you realize it's the year 2002
and you are still using this crap.
* * *
conan doesn't do cpan
this ain't ovah

i can't figure out how to get UTF-8 Block
Elements to go in mozilla. since i
don't use underline cursors in my terminals, i'd like my terminal
excerpts to use a block (or, hollow) cursor.

this
hits so close to home it hurts.

October 12, 2002
i honestly can't find a native os x mail client as good as evo.
this week i've tried entourage, grendel, mozilla, and Mail.app.
hmm i remember having some strange dreams last night but can't
remember what about.
it will be interesting to see who misses more pucks going into the
net: grahame or the nesn camera crew.
``The fifth goal was totally my fault,'' Grahame said.
* * *
i need to figure out a decent style for the music stuff.
joe and i had an early indian dinner with phil, who then got an
x-box and so we played some nhl 2003 at his place. it looks quite a
bit nicer and runs a lot more smoothly than the ps2, but i don't
really like the controllers (s type - the one that came with it is
horrendous).
here are my theories for this sniper
thing:
- it actually is god and he is avenging the sins of his
subjects. my religious friends tell me god is vengeful and stuff.
- it's someone from the government, meant to distract people from
the economy, the "war" on "terror", and iraq.
the fact that peace protests in dc can get cancelled due to the
sniper thing adds some weight to this argument.
- it's really a bunch of people. if one gets caught, the others
will continue to shoot people and then they might end up releasing
the one guy. this would be hard to pull off, as the temptation to
squeal would be very high (well joe says this). i don't actually
think this is the case (as opposed to the other two).
- if it was terrorists i'd argue that they'd be doing it in
multiple cities. i think that'd really freak people out. also it'd
be really difficult to pull off.
- hmm now i want to play gta3 again.
going to sleep { hungry }...

October 13, 2002
i found a dry bench in the park to eat my chili on.

October 14, 2002
happy thanksgiving to my canadian friends.
it's fun going to bed after reading about more shootings.
yesterday i ran a bit longer than i had been and it wasn't bad.
there's a 5 mi. run in boston on nov. 3 which i might try to do. it
was fairly cold and drizzly yesterday which reminded me of cross
country, and i kind of almost maybe miss doing it.
watching tv (in this case msnbc) is such an incredible experience.
there was just this commercial for some fold out bed thing, and they
showed these people smiling while they were sleeping. i honestly do
not know anyone who has the type of dreams that would lead them to
smile. i sure can't remember having any myself.
******** COUNTDOWN: IRAQ ********
they also have these outragious quotes, like "bush said that
the possible recent terrorist attacks won't deter his efforts
against iraq." phew. for a moment i was worried there.

October 15, 2002
dreams from 4 different recurring themes last night. ugh. little
twists on them though. from now on, i'm never going to sleep. or,
only in 4-hour blocks. this is rediculous.

pretty much everything is going wrong today, but i'm not letting it
get to me.
ever since seeing THE STROKES live, the studio version of
barely legal is so anticlimactic.

i really do love hockey season.

October 17, 2002
samsonov with another game winner last night, and there's another
game on tonight. it turns out that the bruins have this road trip
because the circus is in town, which i should have known since joe
and i saw a circus train car the other day while we were going to
hvd sq.
the colder weather is making the squirrels here go nuts. i saw a
squirrel almost get run over today. also, i almost got hit on the
head again by an acorn. it brushed my leg instead.
boring.... boring........ boring.............

the album i'm listening to has a track called "bootie

stick. last i checked it was 2002, but oh well.

speaking of technology moving backwards... the browns game isn't on
tv (as usual) and i remember back in the day being able to listen to
radio broadcasts on the internet, so i decide to give that a try.
cleveland.com/browns/ (nobody deserves to be actually linked in this
story) doesn't have any link to a radio feed... clevelandbrowns.com
does. ok... HTTP 1.1 Error: Server Too Busy. hmm, ok try
it until i get something...
Resolving webevents.yahoo.com... done.
Connecting to webevents.yahoo.com[63.250.218.188]:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
Length: 877 [video/x-ms-asf]
100%[====================================>] 877 856.45K/s ETA 00:00
(because chimera doesn't actually tell me the mime type)... ok i
guess listening to the browns is worth installing WMP for...
fire it up... some ad comes on... fast fwd / skip / seek are grayed
out... it's over, then this gem:
like the browns this season, i just can't win
time to get out of this mad house.
* * *
i can't believe today was a good day

October 21, 2002
another bruins win!
i like this picture because there's a
button in the upper right, like the one below with my phone
i am still not totally used to having a place where i'm allowed to
turn the heat up, and it actually warms up the place.
i cleaned up my desk tonight

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PHIL!!!!!

i'll stick with peach lemonade, thanks

At that point, however, the Mac team was burned out, in tatters.
After the excitement of getting Macintosh out the door had
faded, Joanna Hoffman said to me, "Nobody could go back to
a job." Those who tried found themselves listless and
uninspired. It was postpartum depression, componded by shock
and horror at the computer's failure to conquer the world.
my neck hurts, so i haven't been running.
the venus de milo gummy episode of the simpsons was on tonight, and
it's sepctacular. from the under the sea bit to the 49 star flag,
it's impressive to see what they put on in their 4th season.
ie scrolls a thousand times more smoothly than chimera.

October 23, 2002
how did people waste time before the interner and gta?
the monorail simpsons was on today. seems it's about time to make
another best-of-TiVo dvd.
also i finished "insanely great" but my books on xerox
parc haven't arrived.

October 24, 2002
i'm on the last mission in GTA3 again; should be a fun evening.
* * *
the last mission was a lot easier this time around. i guess i had a
bit more confidence, in addition to knowing how to do it.
dinner was at the indian place with phil, joe, nat, and eventually
alex. it was just what the doctor ordered.
i have 6 (six!!) loads of clean clothes. and i didn't even break
into the new roll of quarters i have.
i also think remote
kernel debugging with gdb over tcp/ip is ummm neat. but i don't
actually know anything.
* * *
October 25, 2002
shaver: remind me to make you read
parts of "insanely great" where they talk about making
computers for people to use, rather than making people use computers,
and think of language in this light.
i just noticed that ticketmaster charges both a per-ticket and a
per-order rape fee.
* * *
the os x kernel docs contain this beauty:
The example values provided in comments are based on the estimated
needs of esd (the Esound daemon).
and then some sample code from esd. in. san. i. ty.
* * *
i went over to phil's and he cooked a chicken, carrots, and potato
dinner. that was followed with orders of magnitude more halo than
was needed; however fun sniping from long range is.
i just replaced 9 (nine!!!) lightbulbs in our (smallish)
apartment. there were actually some lights that were still working
(however ~half of them were in appliancs [ stove, refrigerator ]).
it is now very bright in here.
ugh it's 6 am again...
* * *
October 28, 2002
i had a pretty crazy dream this morning... i was going back to
chautauqua and for some reason decided to get a motorized wheelchair
for getting around. a bit before i woke up i was gunning it down
some street, wondering if other drivers could see me.
and my xerox parc books arrived, so i have stuff to read again.
* * *
people are carving pumpkins at work today. there seem to have been
a lot of advances, in terms of little carving aides. sadly i have
no inspiration for doing one.
* * *
so cute!

October 29, 2002
was 24 this bad last year? it makes strangers with candy look
brilliant.

October 30, 2002
ian does a scarily good joe impression, although it wasn't good
enough to get him first place at the company halloween party dealie.
since the west wing was on, we missed the bruins game:
Bruins C P.J. Stock,
who had 122 penalty minutes last season, picked up his first
fighting major of the season in a third-period scrap with Stephen
Peat. With two assists, Stock recorded his first career
multiple-point game.
speaking of the west wing, aaron sorkin really
seems to think highly of himself these days. i really should have
seen this sam thing an episode or 2 ago, oh well.

October 31, 2002
ANOTHER SHORT QUIZ.
PLEASE CHECK ALL THAT APPLY. SHOW YOUR WORK:
[ ] I often get out of bed in the morning just to stop the horrible,
horrible dreams
dream number one was it was my last day at ximian, and i had to pack
up and take all of my stuff out of the office. my sister was there,
but she didn't know it was my last day. i was flying home for
thanksgiving that day, so was a bit pressed for time. i discovered
a ton of stuff that i had forgotten about, including a box full of
wooden blocks that i used to play with when i was little. anyway i
was all late and running around going crazy.
dream number two was me being at school or something. my bedroom
was on the ground floor of a building, in the corner. it had large
windows facing the street, so people could look in. there was
someone who looked like diana macwilliams, and she was staring at
something on my bed. i looked there, and there were a bunch of
small snakes on it (they were only like a foot long). i picked up
one of them, and bent it in half until it snapped like a crisp vegetable.
dream number three was a combination of the two: i was at school and
had to catch a flight. i was in some tunnels going between
buildings, and some guys were trying to pull me with them to some
hip hop show or something. i resisted, but they wouldn't let me go
until i told them i had a plane to catch. there was a bathroom that
you had to go through. it was friday night and people had been
drinking too much; i could see it on their faces. inside the
bathroom, there was vomit pretty much everywhere, including all over
the [ closed ] door i had to go through to get out of here. i
remember reading that either some or all people dream in black and
white (which i know not to be true for myself), but not only was
this in vivid color, BUT I COULD TASTE THE VOMIT as i walked through
the door. fortunately, it tasted somewhat like the skittles i had
yesterday.

i almost pulled a shaver
with my mispelling of "COULD" as "COLD".
* * *
speaking of pj stock, he seems to have a blog now too.
he writes almost as much as nat used to write (before he had the
camera) and is even funnier than some of my stuff.
when joe and i watch the simpsons these days, we say things like
"the direction in this scene is superb".
