i haven't been in school for 2 years now. where did the time go?

today i have been playing around with this little snack of a make rule:

%.h: %.builtins $($(subst -,_,$*)_builtins_headers) $(GLIB_MKENUMS) Makefile ; files="" && type_prefix="$($(subst -,_,$*)_builtins_TYPE_PREFIX)_" && if [ $$type_prefix = "_" ]; then type_prefix="" ; fi && for file in $($(subst -,_,$*)_builtins_headers) ; do if [ -f $(builddir)/$$file ] ; then files="$$files $(builddir)/$$file" ; elif [ -f $(srcdir)/$$file ] ; then files="$$files $(srcdir)/$$file" ; fi done && $(GLIB_MKENUMS) --fprod "\n/* enumerations from \"@filename@\" */" --eprod "#define "$$type_prefix"TYPE_@ENUMSHORT@ @enum_name@_get_type()\n" --eprod "GType @enum_name@_get_type (void);\n" $$files > xgen-$@ && (cmp -s xgen-$@ $@ || cp xgen-$@ $@) && rm -f xgen-$@

hopefully i will get it to be a little nicer.

i've been sanitizing my life a bit the past few days.

friday i got pissed that there was no good ide for linux programming, so i wrote one in make and awk. there were some bugs that seem like they won't be easy to fix, so i invested some time in beefing up my emacs environment, such as turning on some stuff which makes font-lock learn about gtk types etc. and some other snacks.

i also adjusted my devhelp setup such that it will use the docs built by my gnome 2 snapshots, which is really nice. i also rearranged my virtual desktops such that i can use devhelp more easily.

today i decided to upgrade my kernel. i think i've mentioned here before the acpi bug where my cpu will get throttled, but never unthrottled. this results in me never being able to get the full speed out of it, basically. it really sucks as starting evolution is enough to warm it up such that the cpu gets throttled.

so anyway there was a patch posted to the acpi list months ago which lets you tweak this via a /proc entry. since i have still been running 2.4.14 i decided i may as well upgrade that, too. so i got the various patches and stuff and built a 2.4.17-rc1 kernel with xfs, acpi from nov 9 (no newer ones work on vaios; next version is supposed to fix this) and after a while got that patch working. so now my 750 MHz will actually be 750 MHz. hooray!

i also paid my spring bill and switched to a $30 / 3000 minute plan. seems much better as i had 360 minutes for the same price with my old one. also looked at money market accounts but fleet is low on details on their web page, so i will have to stop there on my way to work tomorrow. hopefully they will not try to screw me if i convert my savings account to this (they didn't tell me until after i had signed up that the savings account only got 1% interest).

so my life is pretty much in order except for laundry. might do that after i try to get a cd and some books.

in the news:

AP: Cleveland's 2001 home season finale dissolved into another embarrassing chapter for Browns fans.

MTV: "My client's career is not declining in any sort. She [Courtney Love] is sought after as an actress and a musician. I am surprised they [ Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic ] would use that, especially when 'waning' could be applied to their own careers." -- O. Yale Lewis (Courtney Love's lawyer) on on why i will not be getting a nirvana box set for christmas this year

December 19, 2001

yesterday and today got i gnome support for glade going. today got GnomeAbout and GnomeMessageBox properties working.

after my experiences with my sony laptops, and reading this, this, this, this, this, this, and especially this, (among other urls i don't feel like finding right now) i am pretty much convinced that there is no better laptop for running unix than a tibook.

i could make a big chart with pros and cons of stuff but i am of all things most definitely lazy. but one thing i find funny if one were to compare my current laptop with a tibook would be the MHz comparison. the tibooks come up ti 667 MHz, while mine is supposed to be 750 MHz. sadly if i actually need all that cpu, it drops to at most 640. so the fun per-clock comparisons of ppc vs. intel don't even matter.

some people were complaining on /. today about the RCX stuff being too expensive. now i could point out that the people setting the price may actually have done their homework and figured that'd be the ideal price-point, but this is /. so sensible arguments don't usually work. this is largely because the /. assume that everyone always does everything with them (the /. reader) in mind. sadly this is not the truth. anyway, people would complain a lot less if they assumed they weren't the intended audience. i, of course, always keep this in mind.

besides, there's no way coke actually costs even close to what you pay for it. and i don't see many people on /. complaining about how much coke costs.

December 26, 2001

came to work for a while; caught up on mail, started a snapshot build (which built after me being away for 5 days - it's a miracle) poked at GnomeAbout stuff in glade-2 for a bit.

i have been sleeping a lot the past few days, and yet when i am at the office for a few hours i feel dead tired. i don't understand it.

i can't believe this year isn't over yet. the 2001, the.

December 27, 2001

i bought a guitar last night. it's nice to see that some industries have their act together. i went in unenthusiastically thinking, "hmm, i have to get a guitar, and an amp, some picks, strings, a case, a tuner... and i have to make choices as to which i want to get for all of thse things." fortunately, they have starter kit things which have all of that stuff, at exactly the price i was expecting to pay, so i was in and out quickly without any hassle.

the guitar seems broken though, as it doesn't sound like the ones on my cds. i guess i have to take lessons soon.

spent most of today (so far) fixing bugs in libgnomeui / gtk as exposed by glade. some of these are fun, but some are annoying.

December 28, 2001

worked on some libgnomeui / glade bugs today. the office was quite depressing as there were like 4 people there, and not many people committing. which is kinda good since it doesn't break the snapshots :)

i can "play" some of airbag now, at the cost of some skin now missing from my fingers. so far it seems that radiohead is a bit easier than zeppelin.

something must be wrong with me as i started using a win2k sawfish theme.

December 29, 2001

the last 2 nights i've had dreams about not being able to catch baseballs.

my ac adapter connection on this laptop is not doing so well. if nudged, it will start discharging the battery. i think it wants me to get a tibook.

December 31, 2001

woke up this afternoon after sleeping for 12 hours or so. decided to get a radiohead single, so walked/T'd over to hvd sq. i ended up getting this and a different no suprises than amazon has. the former has a great version of bullet proof, while the latter has live versions of airbag and lucky (which are good, although i think they were better this summer). i also got a smashing pumpkins cd since i figure it's time i find out what they're all about.

near my house

more painful guitar playing. i have learned more chords. i wish joe's guitar would get here such that we can play our Am/Em song together.

TiVo sometimes tapes the end of family ties. it's pretty bad (at least the last 5 minutes>.
